Nearly half of all hijackings in SA happen in Gauteng

Gauteng has the highest number of reported car thefts in SA.

The new police minister, Nkosinathi Nhleko and the Department of Police will release the annual crime statistics for 2014 on 30 September. The statistics will hopefully show a decrease in the number of crimes reported locally, after Nhleko announced in July this year that a whole range of changes will be introduced over the next financial year to enhance the fight against crime.

This comes after dismal stats reported last year, especially in regards to theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles.

According to Crime Stats SA and The Crime and Justice Hub, a civil society initiative by the Governance, and Crime and Justice Division (GCJ) of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), nearly half of all thefts of motor vehicles and motorcycles reported nationally occur in Gauteng. Some of the worst affected suburbs and areas include Johannesburg Central, Honeydew and Benoni.

In Pretoria, things aren’t much better. In the Lyttelton precinct in 2013, 601 thefts and hijackings were reported. Brooklyn precinct received 744 reports of the same nature, and Pretoria West 382.

These statistics are worrying, because after a decline in recent years, the number of reported crimes are increasing. In Lyttelton, statistics show a 6.37% increase in these numbers from 2012 to 2013.
