Man caught after shootout

Two armed men are on the run after they opened fire at the police on Monday morning.

A Johannesburg man was arrested on Monday morning after he and two others fired at police at a Pretoria taxi rank.

Provincial police spokesperson Pinky Tsinyane said the man was caught by the Pretoria K9 and Pretoria central police. The other two escaped.

Police responded to an alert around 04:00 that a Toyota Quantum was burnt to ashes at a taxi rank.

“On arrival at the scene, several shots were fired at the police. Three men got into a Grey Corsa and drove off. A chase ensued and continued into the west side of Atteridgeville,” Tsinyane said.

The fleeing men were shooting through the back window of their car and the police returned fire. The robbers eventually stopped, jumped out of their vehicle and ran in all directions.

“One man from Jeppestown in Johannesburg was arrested at the scene and a 9mm firearm was recovered at the scene.”

She said the police also found three cellphones, a magazine and a five-litre plastic holder containing what looked like petrol.

The arrested man would appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

A police search for his two accomplices continued.
