Hijacker poses as potential car buyer

Man hijacks car at second hand dealership in Montana.

A white Corsa bakkie was hijacked from a second hand dealer in Zambezi (Sefako Makgato) drive on Friday. The suspect approached the second hand dealer under the pretence of wanting to buy a vehicle.

The suspect requested to take the vehicle for a test drive so he took the vehicle for a drive, whilst an employee of the dealership accompanied him as passenger. At the corners of Stephan & Silvergras streets the suspect stopped the vehicle saying that there is something loose at the back of the bakkie.

As the employee was about to exit the vehicle a second suspect appeared next to the vehicle’s passenger window and pointed a firearm at the employee. The two suspects ordered the employee to exit the vehicle and drove off, followed by a third suspect in a Silver BMW.

The vehicle was spotted shortly after the incident. Two of the suspects ran away, the third was arrested by the police.

According to Mirna von Benecke, the spokesperson of the Sinoville police, this is not the first case that was reported in the area.

“We want to emphasise to owners, managers and employees of second hand dealers to please take the necessary precautions. We want them to make sure that when a customer wants to take a test-drive with a vehicle, he has to leave his ID book, drivers licence and/or key of his vehicle at the office. If possible, take a photo of the person who is test driving the vehicle, or make sure that sufficient cameras are installed to view any person entering the premises. Do not allow two strangers to do a test drive together. One must remain at the business premises,” says Von Benecke.

She also advises second hand car dealerships not to accept cash on their business premises, and that they should rather do electronic transfers to avoid business robberies. Von Benecke says that citizens must report suspicious clients to the police immediately.
