Girls robbed at gunpoint

Two matric girls were robbed at a notorious crime hotspot.

Two matric girls of Lyttelton Manor High School were robbed on the Cantonments Road bridge in Lyttelton on Tuesday.

They were on their way home when they were confronted at the notorious crime hotspot, said Lourens Botha, chairman of the Community Police Forum (CPF) of Lyttelton Sector 2.

The girls were crossing the bridge over Botha Avenue when two men, one armed with a handgun, approached them around 3pm and demanded their cellphones. The robbers only managed to get one of the phones before they fled in a black Volkswagen Polo.

Botha said the Lyttelton CPF and the Tshwane Metro Police did patrol the area, but guarding the bridge 24 hours a day was impossible.

Gert van Rensburg of the Lyttelton Sector 2 CPF urged pupils not to walk around with their cellphones visible. Some did hide their phones in their school bags but then walked with earphones plugged in – a giveaway that they had a phone with them.

“Children need to be vigilant when walking in public, especially in areas that are notoriously dangerous,” said Van Rensburg.
