Sunnyside police reiterated their concerns over high levels of crimes, including smash-and- grabs, theft, robberies and fraud schemes at ATMs in Groenkloof and surroundings.
The area, known as Sector 6, stretches from Florence Ribeiro Street to Nelson Mandela Drive, and between the railway line and Waterkloof Golf Course. It includes the Virgin Active gym, Groenkloof Plaza and Fountain Circle.
“We experience problems of theft-out-of motor vehicle and theft of motor vehicles in these areas,” said Sector 6 commander, Warrant Officer Rannus Claassens.
Most smash-and-grabs take place at the Fountain Circle while several motor vehicles and been stolen along George Storrar Drive, he said.
Both the Virgin Active gym and Groenkloof Plaza are notorious for car thefts and thefts from motorcars.
Police said driving with valuables clearly visible in the vehicle attracts criminals to steal.
Property including laptops, cellphones, tablets, bags and wallets, are some of the major contributors to smash-and-grabs and theft. Most victims drive with their valuables visible in their vehicles and that attracts criminals.
“We urge motorists to put their valuables in the boot of their vehicles and leave no valuables on the seats or anywhere criminals could easily identify it,” Claassens said.
Groenkloof Plaza also has a high number of fraud schemes at ATMs, police said. They urge residents not to allow assistance from strangers.
They said there were also a spat of house robberies in both Muckleneuck and Groenkloof.
Claassens advised residents to keep their gates locked at all times and have security systems in working order.
As the festive season approaches, criminal activity increases.
For this reason, police urged residents not to leave their homes unattended when going on holiday.
Police asked residents to help them in their fight against crime.
They encouraged residents to be the eyes and ears of the police by, among other things, to immediately report suspicious people.
