Baton stick broke into pieces in crime fight

The Hatfield CID security guard has been praised for saving the University of Pretoria student's vehicle from being stolen on the corner of Lynnwood Drive and William Street.

A Hatfield City Improvement District (CID) security guard had his baton stick broken into three pieces when confronting car thieves on the corner of Lynnwood Drive and William Street in Brooklyn on Friday.

The drama started when Benjamin Sibisi saw a suspicious man inside a City Golf parked on the side of the street.

When he approached the car, the occupant swiftly jumped out and got into a nearby 1400 Nissan Bakkie with someone else in the driver’s seat.

When trying to arrest them, Sibisi broke his baton into pieces as he hit the getaway vehicle.

Sibisi discovered that the criminal had already replaced the ignition of the Golf with the one of his own and was close to stealing the car.

The criminal left behind equipment he had used to broke into the car.

Sibisi said: “The level of car theft in the area is high.”

The car he was about to be stole belonged to a University of Pretoria student, Landi van der Merwe, who appreciated the brave response from CID security guard.

“Although I am shocked, I feel good that the criminals had failed to steal my car,” she said.

University of Pretoria Security Operational Manager John Mashabela praised the CID for the swift response in combating crime. He said car theft was a serious problem in the area, and law enforcement agencies should join forces to fight crime.

There was no CCTV camera where the criminals were trying to steal the vehicle.
