Someone appears to be mowing down birds in an area behind Shale Avenue in Zwartkop, where various species of dead birds have been found.
The birds were first discovered by resident Andrew Andreka. In January, he noticed two dead hadedas, one with a small-calibre bullet hole in the head, the other with a similar chest wound.
Andreka has discovered eight more dead birds, including hadedas, a pied crow, a black eyed bulbul, and Indian mynas. The mynas are recognised as an invasive species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, though shooting them is illegal.
The use of firearm in residential areas, or anywhere else that holds the risk of injury or damage to person or property is illegal, and in contravention of the Firearms Control Act, of 2000.
Christine Kuch of the NSPCA said killing birdswas illegal as this contravened the Animal Protection Act. “There are always more humane, methods of dealing with pests. These are also the most effective in the long-term.”
The Tshwane SPCA was informed of the matter and undertook to send an inspector to investigate.
