A busy crossing at the R55 and Lochner Road in Raslouw is crying out for a traffic light, locals said this week.
They say pedestrians and cyclists cross the busy intersection, often into the path of oncoming cars. There are homeless people pushing carts across the road, sometimes spilling the contents onto the road.
Centurion residents Jacques and Mada Janse van Rensburg have been actively petitioning to get the Tshwane Metro to create a proper intersection, with a traffic light.
With the help of Councillor Marika Kruger Müller, the Janse van Rensburgs submitted a petition signed by residents to the Tshwane metro at the end of last year.
Early this year, a petition committee gathered and discussed the problem with the metro.
“It was agreed that an oversight committee would look into the matter, and agree upon the appropriate course of action,” said Müller.
“The oversight committee sent a metro police officer to do an In Loco inspection, but this was in the afternoon, and not during the morning rush hour. Because of this, the committee was unable to do a proper assessment.”
Mada said the request should not even have to be followed up by civilians.
“Any dangerous intersection must be inspected and made secure by the local government, or the provincial roads agency, or the local roads department. But they all send us to each other,” she said.
“It is almost a year later, and nothing has been done. Everyone seems to be passing the buck.”
