The deaths of three young women recently in Mamelodi prompted the ANC Women League to lead thousands of residents of Mamelodi in a peaceful march against women and child abuse on Monday.
The demonstration was supported by the Community Policing Forum, Mamelodi Taxi Association, Mamelodi Long Distance Taxi Association, Metro police, the SA Police Service, the SA National Civic Organisation, Mamelodi Youth, Church members and the 4+1 local Taxi Association.
Participants laid a wreath in areas where the three young women were found killed, and sang and prayed for justice.
The body of Letta Letsoalo (23) was found killed behind Shell Garage on September 01 and Katlego Ndlovu (23) was discovered at Phase 1 on September 02. The third body that was found inside a dumpster on September 10 is still to be identified .
Secretary of the ANC Women’s League in Tshwane, Alphina Ndlovana said: “We are all hurting over what happened to the three young women. Young women must be vigilant at all the times and especially at night. We have all the stakeholders on board and hope soon that justice will be done and the person responsible for this will soon be arrested.”
Chairperson of Community Policing Forum Eddie Mnguni warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, saying they would only end up destroying evidence that could lead to the arrest of the culprit.
Chairperson of 4+1 taxi association, Strike Mtshweni said: “We have decided to mark our taxis because the suspected serial killer was pretending to be a taxi driver at night.”
Police Brigadier Lungisa Tshayane implored anyone with useful information to speak up. “The police pleads with the community to come forward with any information that could lead to the identification and of the suspect or suspects.”
Betty Malamba (27) from Mamelodi East supported this call, saying: “The suspect could be anyone and we hope the police will catch the suspect soon.”
