Cable thieves at it again

Some parts of Pretoria West are without electricity after cables were stolen in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Parts of Pretoria West were without electricity on Thursday after cables were stolen in the early hours of the morning.

SA National Civics Organisation (Sanco) chairperson Nagesh Chetty said residents woke up to find cables lying on the pavement.

“Soutter, Mitchell, Rebecca, Carl and Frederika streets were attacked by cable thieves. The cables are lying all over the pavement.”

He said cable theft was costing the Tshwane metro a fortune, not to talk about the expense of repairs.

“Something needs to be done about this problem to stop the criminals. This is affecting people’s businesses, and they are losing a lot of money. Residents living in the area are at a loss.”

The theft of cables has become commonplace in the west of Pretoria, leading to the impression that thieves found it easy to commit this type of crime, said Chetty.

Comment from Tshwane metro could not immediately be obtained.
