Water finally restored

Water is finally restored in all parts of Tshwane after residents were without water for nearly three weeks, Rand Water said.

After nearly three weeks without water, Rand Water said water has been restored to all parts of Tshwane.

“Water has been restored to all affected areas including Akasia and other northern parts of Pretoria,” said spokesperson Justice Mohale.

Residents were left hot and dry after cable theft and vandalism at the Palmiet Pump Station interrupted water supply.

As an alternative measure, the City of Tshwane dispatched 17 water tankers last week to the affected areas.

Mohale said water levels at reservoirs are still low but sufficient to start pumping.

“Water levels will take time to be full. Currently, water has reached a certain level and we are able to pump,” he said.

Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, the Minister of Water Affairs, Nomvula Mokonyane said the department will implement interventions to avoid vulnerability of infrastructure.

“We need to make sure that every municipality has a plan of at least ten years on infrastructure. Together with the national treasury, we will ensure 7% of municipal budgets is put aside for maintenance,” said the minister.

Meanwhile, Mohale urges residents to still use water sparingly, even though the situation is under control.

“Water being restored does not mean that the problem is over. We will continue with educational campaigns to educate people on water conservation,” he said.
