Do not tamper with fire hydrants
Hefty fines await those who damage hose reels or fire hydrants.
A hefty fine of R2 500 could await those obstructing or damaging a fire hydrant or hose reel.
Johan Pieterse, spokesperson for the Tshwane Emergency Services, said several complaints about the illegal use and misuse of hose reels and fire hydrants had been received lately .
He said the sole purpose of hose reels and fire hydrants were to fight fire.
“Fire hose reels must not be obscured from view, except where their positions are clearly marked. The responsible person must ensure that the hose reels and hydrants are used only for the purpose that they are intended for. The location of each fire hose and the above-ground hydrant must be identified and recorded,” he said.
Pieterse said it was illegal to use a fire hydrant to obtain water for purposes other than fire fighting, unless authorised by the water authority or person to whom the hydrant belongs.
“A person who uses a fire hydrant without the appropriate authorisation is liable to prosecution,” Pieterse warned.
Enquiries: All fire hydrant leaks or damaged hydrants can be reported to the emergency call centre on 012-358-2111.
