The Tshwane Metro has fixed some of the infrastructure problems that plagues Jan Smuts Avenue in Irene.
A cable fault knocked the street lights in the area out, causing havoc for the residents.
The downed lights meant that walking around at night was highly dangerous, as the dark cover of night gave would-be criminals a place to hide.
This lead to various incidents around the area, including a recent near-fatal stabbing.
Lifa Selepe of the Tshwane metro electricity department, has said that a cable fault, and not cable theft as originally suspected, was the cause of the problem. “It takes quite long to fix a cable fault, because the problem needs to be identified first.”
“We fixed the problem as soon as we could, because the residents are our top priority,” says Selepe.
This is the first step in fixing many of the infrastructural issues that affect the area. Some residents are still fuming about manhole covers that have been standing open for months.“We are thankful that the metro has fixed the street lights, but these manholes need to be covered as well. A child could fall in there,” says Lonsdale O’Donovan, a resident of Jan Smuts Avenue.
