Infrastructure upgrades disrupt residents

Upgrades to electrical infrastructure causing headaches for Eldoraigne residents.

Eldoraigne residents are frustrated as new infrastructure upgrades are said to be disruptive.

Quebec Electrical has been contracted to replace old electrical cables with new high tension cables, in order to provide electricity to a newly built retirement village in Eldoraigne, and to minimise the areas affected by power outages.

“We were contracted by the municipality to upgrade the electrical infrastructure. These are necessary in order for the electricity supply to be maintained,” says Dawie van der Merwe of Quebec Electrical.

Quebec Electrical is currently digging trenches and replacing cables along the servitudes in Boekenhout Road, close to Hoërskool Eldoraigne.

Some residents are also upset that driveways and servitudes are being dug up, but Van der Merwe maintains that this is necessary. “The electrical cables run along the servitude. Unfortunately we have to dig up driveways to install the new cables. We try and avoid trees and flower beds as best we can. We also try and do this as quickly as possible. We can dig up, replace the cables and fill the ditch within an hour, so that we don’t disrupt people’s lives. We know this is an inconvenience, but we are working as fast as we can.”

The entire project is scheduled to be completed by 30 November, as long as heavy rain doesn’t disrupt the workflow. Quebec Electrical has also urged anyone with problems or complaints to contact them as soon as possible, so that they can attend to it.

Residents can phone site supervisor Melt van der Spuy on 082 771 4412, who will assist with any issue relating to the upgrades.
