Police continue searching prison escapees

Police are still searching for an unknown number of men after a police truck carrying 28 prisoners was shot at and prisoners freed.

Police are still looking for 12 prisoners and an unknown number of men who shot at a Ga-Rankuwa police truck carrying prisoners, forcing open the truck door and freeing the offenders, police spokesperson Captain Doniah Mothutsane said.

“Of the escaped prisoners, 15 were re-arrested and are facing charges of escaping from custody. We are still searching for the 12 others as well as the suspects that freed them,” she said on Monday.

The 28 prisoners were being transported from Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court to Kgosi Mampuru Prison on Friday afternoon when they were allegedly ambushed by armed men on Medunsa Road.

“The suspects started shooting at the police truck carrying the prisoners. The suspects then forced open the door of the truck,” Mothutsane said.

Some of the prisoners fled in the suspects’ car, a grey Chevrolet Aveo, while others fled on foot

“No one has been injured and investigations are under way. We appeal to anyone with any information to report to 0800-10-111 or contact their nearest police station.”
