Four men were arrested in Pretoria West on Tuesday in connection with cable theft, metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said.
He said the Tshwane metro police’s special projects unit caught them with suspected stolen copper cables in their possession.
“During an operation in Pretoria West on Tuesday, the unit noticed the four men at a recycling dealership. The unit approached the men and requested legal proof for the copper cables, which they could not provide,” Mahamba said.
He estimated the street value of the cables at R12 000.
The recycling dealership had a legal right to trade in the area, but further enquiries would be made.
The special unit was set up in the beginning of the year after a spate of cable theft hit Centurion and other areas.
Mahamba said the unit’s brief was to stake out scrap yard dealerships around the Tshwane region in an attempt to root out cable theft. It had made more than 100 arrests since its inception.
