Police officers charged with theft and corruption

Two police officers to appear in court after they were arrested for possible theft and corruption.

Two Diepsloot police officers are to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on charges of theft and corruption.

The sergeant and a reservist constable allegedly stole liquor when they raided a tavern in Diepsloot in June this year, police spokesperson Warrant officer Daniel Mavimbela said on Wednesday.

“They confiscated liquor valued at about R6 500. It is reported that the tavern owner was asked for R800, meant to secure his own freedom. Apparently he could only manage R700, which the men allegedly received,” Mavimbela said.

When the tavern owner went to the police station to protest, it was discovered that neither the liquor nor the cash were recorded in the registers. The police officers are currently out on a warning.

They would be back in court on November, Mavimbela said.
