Two Malawian nationals were arrested in connection with cable theft in Hercules on Tuesday, police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said.
They were caught with Transnet copper cables in their possession by members of the rapid response cable theft task team, who were on a routine patrol.
“Around 10:30 at SA Metal scrap dealers in Hercules, police from the task team were busy conducting an inspection when they spotted a Volvo Sedan driving into the premises. They pulled over the vehicle and searched it.”
Msimango said copper cables were found inside the car. They were identified as Transnet overhead cables.
“The cables weighed 333.4 kg with a value of R18 337. The suspects were arrested at the dealership.”
The two men, aged 23 and 37, will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon, said Msimango.
