Four men accused of having ambushed a police truck carrying prisoners appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court this week.
They were arrested and Sunday and made their first court appearance on Tuesday, police spokesperson Captain Doniah Mothutsane said. The four were charged with attempted murder. They remained in custody and would be back in court next Tuesday.
The truck was ambushed in Lucas Mangope Drive in Ga-Rankuwa last week, leading to the escape of 28 awaiting trial prisoners.
“Sixteen of the 28 were re-arrested soon after they escaped. Twelve prisoners are still at large,” Mothutsane said.
The police implored communities to help. The escapees and the charges they face are:
– Patrick Makwe – attempted rape
– Solly Masia – armed robbery
– Johannes Boy Mojapelo – theft
– Nkisang Mashobane – theft
– Leonard Watson – armed robbery
– Jimmy Ramochia – house breaking
– Willy Madonsela – protection order violation
– Dikgang Jan Nene – possession of firearm
– Bongani Ngomane – armed robbery
– Thabo Samuel Mashaba – conspiracy to commit a sexual offence
– Tiisetso Mogorosi – shoplifting
– Sello Mmotlana – housebreaking
