Coping with stress during exams

Tips to deal with stress during the final matric exams.

Stress in any form is harmful to the body and could spiral out of control at any time.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) have put together a view pointers for parents and pupils to help them cope during the matric final exams.

*Organising your time – Draw up weekly timetables, allow flexibility, be realistic, allow time for relaxation, plan for revision periods, decide on the order of topics and how much time you want to spend on each.

*Implement better sleeping patterns – do not work on your bed, stop studying at least an hour before bedtime, get enough sleep (six to eight hours).

*Study patterns – take regular breaks from studying, when distracted get up and take a break.

*Relaxation methods – focus your attention on counting breaths, close eyes and breath slowly, try to relax stressed muscles and give yourself a little treat each day.

*On the day of exam – do not drink alcohol, smoke or use drugs to sooth your nerves because it could impair your ability to think clearly.

*Eat one proper meal per day and keep the body hydrated, exercise to increase blood flow. “Just a 10-minute walk a day can be helpful, especially for using up some of the extra adrenaline created by stress,” SADAG said.
