D-day for Grade 12 pupils

Good luck messages and well wishes have been streaming in to support matric pupils who are writing their final exams.

Monday (27 October) marked the first day for this year’s final matric exams and well wishes have been streaming in from all corners of the country, wishing each and every Grade 12 pupil good luck.

President Jacob Zuma urged pupils in a statement on Monday to study hard and give themselves time to rest.

“We also appeal to parents not to put too much pressure on them, but to provide support and encouragement. We want all our pupils to do well in their exams,” he said.

Phumla Sekhonyane, spokesperson for the Gauteng department of education said they are ready and geared to assist and support the 143 647 Grade 12 pupils writing their exams across the country.

“This will be a trying time for them, as the outcome of these important exams will determine their future plans for the years to come,” she said in a statement.

A total of 101 265 fulltime candidates and 42 382 part time candidates have registered to complete their National Senior Certificate (NSC).

Sekhonyane said, as a province, they have high expectations for each and every pupil to succeed.

“We established matric revision camps across in areas such as Magaliesburg, Hammanskraal and Vanderbijlpark to provide opportunities for intensified study and drill sessions aimed at increased content coverage as well as intensified exam practice,” she said.

She said other support structures have been put in place to provide assistance to pupils who find themselves in “stressful situations as a result of pressure from the exams.”

Matric results are expected to be released on 6 January 2015 at schools.
