Nyaope boys put behind bars

The CID nabbed nyaope boys before selling suspected stolen storm water drain cover to a scrapyard in the city centre on Monday.

Three men were arrested after being found in possession of a suspected stolen storm water drain cover in city centre on Monday.

Members of the Church Street City Improvement District (CID) security took them into custody on the corner of Andries and Struben streets.

The men, aged 22, 24 and 29, were caught while on their way to sell the drain cover to a scrapyard in Paul Kruger Street after the city’s CCTV operators alerted the CID.

The nyaope boys said they were on their way sell the cover for money to buy nyaope . They were hoping to get more than R60 for the piece of iron of about 25kg.

“This drain gives us lot of money,” a nyaope boy said.

CID security officer Willem Silence said the theft of drain covers was a major problem in the city centre and surrounding, and uncovered drains pause danger to the public.

“Residents can fall into uncovered storm water drain holes and break their legs.”

Silence said the three faced charges of possession of stolen property.
