Hunt for mall robbers intensified
Another three alleged mall robbers have been arrested in a special operation. “The hunt for other possible members has intensified,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale.
Thirty suspected robbers have been arrested in connection with a spate of mall robberies that recently hit Gauteng and the Western Cape, police said on Tuesday.
According to Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale, police spokesperson, three more people were arrested in the Vaal Triangle after a night-long operation driven by the National Crime Intelligence Unit and the Tactical Operation Management section in Gauteng.
It is believed these alleged robbers are connected to last week’s Irene Mall robberies and a robbery at a mall in Johannesburg.
Two men and a woman were arrested. It is believed that the 30-year-old woman is the “keeper” of the firearms and ammunition. “The woman had three unlicensed firearms and several rounds of live ammunition in her possession. We suspect she holds the arms and ammunition for this gang. They will appear in court soon,” Makgale said.
He said police investigations revealed that the three suspected robbers are linked to at least two other robberies at these malls. It has been determined that they are part of a bigger gang and the hunt for the other members of the gang has intensified.
“However, we still appeal to the management of the various malls to increase their security, especially around the inner parameters. We also urge members of the public to please come forward with any information which could assist in preventing these robberies and other crimes,” Makgale said.
