Family tied up before robbery

"The four men took the owner of the business inside the house and tied him together with his family. They then ransacked the house."

Four men robbed a Laudium businessman at home in the early hours of Saturday morning, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Reed Steynberg said man was accosted when he went outside the house around 5.55.

“The four men took him inside and tied him up together with his family. They then ransacked the house.”

Steynberg said jewellery, cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money were stolen.

“They sped off with the Mercedes Benz belonging to the businessman.”

She said no injuries were reported and no arrests had been made.

The Mercedes Benz was later recovered in Atteridgeville on Saturday.

“We appeal to residents to always look outside before opening the doors, and to ensure that there are no strange people in their yardsor in the streets,” said Styenberg.

She said crimes where robbers tied up home owners were common in the Laudium area.

“We usually have such incidents reported to the police station, but we never had a case where there were injuries or home owners killed.”

She said such crimes usually showed an increase in the run-up to the festive season.

“We advise residents to keep their doors also locked during the day. Call the police if anyone suspicious is noticed.”
