Two sentenced for pensioner’s murder

Two men were sentenced to 40 years and 33 years in prison respectively for robbing and killing a pensioner.

Two men were sentenced to 40 years and 33 years in prison respectively after they appeared in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for the murder of a 62-year-old pensioner in Hammanskraal.

Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said the two men, Tumelo Mangentane (26) and Sekhu Morakeng (20) had attacked Grey Mokgobotlwa (62) at his home in Ramotse Village in Temba on 11 September 2013.

“They robbed him of his R600 pension money and strangled him to death with his belt before fleeing. Mokgobotlwa was alone in the house at the time of the incident,” he said.

Mangentane and Morakeng were found after police received information that the murderers were seen at various taverns in the area.

“They were arrested and admitted the charges against them. Tumelo Mangetane was sentenced to 20 years for murder and another 20 for house robbery while Sekhu Morakeng received 18 years in prison for murder and 15 years for house robbery,” Moremi said.
