The 63 children at President Kruger’s children’s home are without transport to school after two minibuses were stolen from the organisation’s premises in Villieria on Wednesday morning, marketer and fundraiser Retha Van Der Merwe told Rekord.
“It happened in the early hours of the morning and we didn’t hear or see anything. When we woke up, our driver went to get the minibuses and when he opened the garage, they were both gone,” she said.
Three of the children’s bicycles were also taken.
Van Der Merwe said one of the minibuses was recovered in Mpumalanga but has not yet been returned to them.
“We haven’t received the minibus yet and the other is still at large. In the meantime, this has had a huge effect on us. The minibuses transported the children to school and were also used to buy groceries and cleaning chemicals. This makes it difficult for us,” she said.
Villieria police spokesperson Captain Koba Brits said the incident is being investigated.
“I can confirm that a case of theft has been opened,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Solidarity Helping Hand contributed R10 000 to the organisation’s relief fund to assist with replacing the vehicles.
“It is very sad that defenceless children who come from challenging circumstances have become victims of crime. Helping Hand wants to support the children’s home as much as possible during this crisis,” said executive director Danie Brink.
