Rooiwal residents suffocating from stink

Residents of Rooiwal in the north of Pretoria are fed up with an unbearable stink from an overflowing sewage farm.

Residents of Rooiwal in the north of Pretoria are fed up with an unbearable stink from an overflowing sewage farm.

Resident Gerhard de Waal said the community had decided to sign a petition together with AfriForum to demand action from the Tshwane-metro, which was apparently claiming that it did not have the money to fix the problem.

De Waal said the sewage dams were full and overflowing. Untreated, excess sewage was being pumped out into the ground around the sewage farm. This had caused a massive inflow of flies, making living conditions even more miserable.

Scores of fish in nearby streams had been killed in water polluted by sewerage.

De Waal said the Tshwane metro said on 13 October it did not have the money to fix problems at the sewage farm.

Another resident, Jean-Pierre Theron, said: “You cannot do anything outside without the flies attacking you from all sides. This must be stopped. It is a very big problem for my workers and my life stock.”

Comment from the Tshwane-metro could not be obtained immediately.
