Hennie Smit still in ICU
Hennie Smit has been in hospital for almost eight weeks, but is recovering steadily.
Singer and actor Hennie Smit remains on the road to recovery after spending almost eight weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Life Wilgers hospital, a friend said on Wednesday.
Arina de Witt, who visited him in hospital earlier in the day, said Smit was showing progress every day.
“Hennie is still on a ventilator and struggling to speak, but we are hopeful that he will soon make a full recovery,” De Witt said.
“As soon as his lungs function properly again, he will be taken off the ventilator. If everything goes well, Hennie will be discharged from hospital next week.”
Smit was admitted to hospital with pneumonia early in September.
De Witt and Smit had been planning a concert together for the end of November before Smit fell ill. Instead, a concert in celebration of Smit’s life will now be held at the Atterbury Theatre on Sunday, 30 November.
Celebrities and friends of Smit to attend and perform at the concert include Laurika Rauch, André Schwartz, Sonja Herholdt, Francois and Elizabeth Fourie, Brümilda Van Rensburg, Hannes van Wyk, Leon Schuster, Rian van Heerden, Arina de Witt, Frans Swart (director of the concert) and the cast from the well-known production My Boetie se Sussie se Ou.
Proceeds will go to Smit who has not been able to work for almost two months. Some of the money will also be used to cover a chunk of his medical bill not covered by his medical aid.
Tickets for Konsert vir Hennie will cost R200 per person and is sold at Computicket or at 012-471-1700.
