Scores nabbed at Laudium road block

The metro police focused on the roadworthiness of vehicles, while home affairs officials were on the lookout for foreigners without valid documents.

A total of 250 people were arrested at a Laudium road block at the weekend, police said.

Spokesperson Captain Reed Steynberg said this formed part of a drive to curb crime in the area.

“We searched cars and passengers for drugs, unlicensed firearms, illegal immigrants and stolen items.”

The roadblock was manned in conjunction with the Tshwane metro police, home affairs officials and the SA Police Service.

“The metro police focused on the roadworthiness of vehicles, while home affairs officials were on the lookout for foreigners without valid documents,” said Steynberg.

The road block was set up on the R55, which connects Erasmia, Laudium, and Pretoria West.

“Some of the people we stopped came from as far as Johannesburg. This is a major route that carries a lot of people,” Steynberg said.

The arrests were prompted by offences such as possession of suspected stolen items, possession of dagga, possession of stolen vehicles, and assault.

Those arrested would appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court.

Steynberg said: “As we are heading for the festive season we try to increase police visibility. We ask motorists and taxi operators to comply and let us do our job, and to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and safe to be on the road.”

Steynberg urged motorists not to drink and drive.

“A lot of bad accidents happen around this time of the year. Police will adopt zero percent tolerance for drunk driving and those caught would face the full might of the law.”
