Linky Mphahlele (48) from Mamelodi West, Section D1 is ploughing back into the community by cooking delicious food for senior citizens. She cooks and serves the elderly with breakfast and lunch in a church in Mamelodi East from Monday to Friday.
“I started serving only three senior citizens in September, but the number has grown to 68. I always loved senior citizens ever since I worked in a hospital and old-age homes years ago. I always listened to the elders telling me fascinating stories,” Mphahlele said.
She uses her own money to buy the ingredients and receives grocery donations from good Samaritans.
“I am doing this because most of the elderly are left at home without food and their only food is available at supper. Some seniors can’t cook for themselves, while others are disabled and can’t manage on their own,” Mphahlele said.
She dreams of having her own old-age home one day and taking care of the senior citizens every day and night.
Martha Nkuna (84), a senior citizen, said: “It is amazing what Mphahlele is doing. I always prayed for something like this to happen in our community because most elderly people are struggling a lot and even cook for themselves and only have one meal per day or sometimes nothing. She must continue to help others and we will pray for her to have the power and strength.”
Mphahlele pleaded with local businessmen to support with grocery donations so that she can keep on cooking for the elderly around Mamelodi.
