Sunnyside Cluster arrests 64 over weekend

Police in the Sunnyside Cluster arrested 64 people during high police visibility operations over the weekend.

A total of 64 alleged criminals were arrested in the Sunnyside Cluster over the weekend, police said on Sunday.

Police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach said the police in the cluster (Sunnyside, Brooklyn, Garsfontein, Villieria, Pretoria Moot and Lyttelton police stations) had committed themselves to secure and be more visible on the streets, residential areas and business sectors to ensure that all communities are and feel safe.

These high police visibility operations over the weekend focused mainly on property and contact related crimes.

“The arrests that were made from Friday (21 November) till Sunday morning (23 November) include three arrests for possession of suspected stolen property, three for possession of car-breaking equipment, one for possession of a suspected a stolen vehicle, one for theft out of a motor vehicle, three for the theft of electrical cables and four for burglary at business premises,” Weilbach said.

“Two suspects were also arrested for the possession of an unlicensed firearm, two for common robberies, four for assault and four for drug related offences. Other arrests were made for crimes ranging from theft, fraud, reckless and negligence driving, drunkenness, public indecency, malicious damage to property and sexual assault,” she said.

These arrests form part of the police’s festive season operations.

“The police will continue their concentrated efforts throughout the festive season to make it unbearable for criminals to commit crime in the Sunnyside Cluster. The public are encouraged to be the eyes and the ears of the police and to report any criminal activities,” she said.
