German man creates Bond-style laser watch
German inventor creates powerful laser watch that burns through plastic.
The world’s first James Bond-style laser watch has been created by German inventor Patrick Priebe. The invention was inspired by the 1983 Bond film Never Say Never Again, which features a powerful laser that can burn and destroy items from meters away.
Priebe’s futuristic watch has a metal body, a blue LED display, a carbon fibre face and a 1 500-milliwatt laser. The watch also has two tiny brass buttons that control the LED display and the laser.
The watch had apparently cost Priebe around $200 (roughly R2 200) in parts, and took between 40 and 50 hours to complete.
Priebe said he did not plan to mass produce the watch, which he would have to sell for more than $300, because he believes it is not a toy.
In a YouTube video by Priebe, he demonstrated the abilities of the watch, announcing the presentation with: “Time for laser fun…”
The laser can pop balloons from a few metres, light matches, and burn through plastic CD cases and packaging tape. Priebe uses his website, www.laser-gadgets.com, to sell other sci-fi inspired items that he made, including a wrist-mounted bow and a glove that shoots pen-sized arrows.
