Down Syndrome NGO robbed

The Down Syndrome Association of Tshwane's office in Lyttelton was ransacked on Sunday.

The Down Syndrome Association of Tshwane‘s office in Lyttelton was robbed of its only vehicle and electronic equipment on Sunday.

Executive officer of the non-profit organization, Ancella Ramjas said criminals gained access to the office in Hofmeyer Street between 00:00 and 02:00 on Sunday morning by lifting the tiles off the roof and climbing through an opening in the ceiling.

“We believe the robbers broke the palisade fencing and one of the culprits crawled through the opening in order to open the gate for his accomplices,” Ramjas said.

“They first tried to break in through one of the windows but failed to do so because of the burglar bars.”

Ramjas said the men then climbed through the ceiling, ripped out the alarm system and ransacked the office.

Three computers and other electronic equipment including a microwave, radio and video camera were stolen.

“The worst of all is that they stole our only vehicle and we will not be able to replace it,” Ramjas said.

“Without a vehicle we will not be able to support children and their parents or provide training or therapy in the different areas across Pretoria,” she said.

“We are devastated and hope the culprits will be caught soon.”

She said the total loss was roughly estimated around R100 000.

The association provides support for children with down syndrome and their parents by providing therapy parents cannot usually afford. They also visit hospitals to support and educate parents with newborn down syndrome babies and provide training for teachers that work with these children.

The theft was reported at the Lyttelton police station.
