Unique Rainbow loom Starbust dress designer from Pretoria

The creative genius behind the one-of-a-kind loom dress currently on auction on Bid or Buy is from Wonderboom South.

The world’s first ‘Rainbow loom Starbust dress’ is currently on auction – created by a woman from Wonderboom South. Gerda Dias (30) worked 16 hours every day for 17 days to finish the dress she describes as an extremely challenging task.

Now Dias has placed the dress on the website Bid or Buy, hoping to sell the unique product to the highest bidder.

“It all started quite innocently in October this year, when my daughter showed me a bracelet she had made with colourful rubber bands and a small loom. I started making bracelets with her and soon found that I have a knack for it. I googled more elaborate patterns and when I easily mastered what was referred to as the ‘most difficult’ pattern, I decided to find a more challenging concept,” Dias said.

She found that a woman in Canada had made a similar, but less elaborate dress with rubber bands and a loom, which she had sold by auction and Dias decided to create her own design.

“It was tough, because it had never been done my way before and I had to make a bigger loom to work with. There were times when I was in tears when I had finished a strand and found I had made a mistake and needed to redo the whole strand, but in the end it was worth it,” she said.

The mother of three worked day and night, because she wanted to complete the dress as soon as possible, even working by candlelight during load shedding. Finally, after 29 744 rubber bands and spending roughly R2 000 on supplies, Dias completed the dress. It is a figure-hugging mini dress with detachable straps and a size eight.

Currently, the highest bidder has offered R40 000 for Dias’ dress and the auction will continue until 27 December.

Dias has also received two orders from people wanting their own Rainbow loom Starbust dresses that she will begin working on soon.

“People underestimate the art of making a dress using a loom, but it is quite a challenge and takes a lot of time and patience,” Dias said.
