Matric marking almost done

The department of basic education expects to finalise the marking of matric exam papers by the end of the month.

The marking of matric exam papers is almost done, the Gauteng department of basic education said this week.

“Most of our papers have been marked and we should be submitting our final scripts before the end of the month,” spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said.

Sekhonyane says apart from the unexpected death of a Tshwane teacher while marking, everything went well and no setbacks were experienced. “The sad incident left everyone in shock and we have offered counselling to colleagues,” Sekhonyane said.

She wished the class of 2014 the best of luck for the future and advised those who did not achieve as planned to consider other options.

“Not doing well is not the end of the world, there are other options. There are supplementary examinations in February that learners can write in order to improve their results. There is also an option of FET (further education and training) colleges,” she explained.

A total of 101 265 full-time and 42 382 part-time candidates have sat for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations this year. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to release the results on 7 January 2015.
