Six gold smugglers arrested at toll gate

Six men are expected to appear in court on charges of smuggling after R23 million worth of gold was found on Monday morning, the Hawks said.

Gold to the value of R23 million was discovered in three vehicles north of Pretoria in the early hours of Monday, prompting the arrest of six men.

The six were caught at the Pumulani Toll Plaza on the N1 after R23 million, Hawks spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

Travelling in three vehicles from Limpopo towards Pretoria, they were pulled over around 02:00 after they had paid at the toll gate. Ramaloko could not yet confirm what their destination was.

“On searching their vehicles, one of which belonged to a cash-in-transit company, 50kg of gold worth R23 million, five firearms and three vehicles were seized,” he said.

Ramaloko said four of the men were employees of the cash-in-transit company.

“They are to appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of dealing in and smuggling precious metal.”
