The Mamelodi police would like to warn the community of Mamelodi to be on a lookout for bogus lawyers.
Community members are asked to report anyone who approach them, claiming to be a lawyer who could assist them with bail applications and court proceedings.
Mamelodi police spokesperson, Johannes Maheso said: “Six months ago the police arrested a women suspected to be a bogus lawyer after she convinced a parent whose son was arrested to pay money into her money market account, and that she would then assist them with bail applications and court proceedings.”
“We suspect that the scam has resurfaced, after an unknown man recently phoned the Mamelodi West police station looking for details of people arrested at the station, therefore we would like to warn the community to report anyone who offers legal assistance out of the blue,” said Maheso.
“The community members must make sure that they have all the details of people who claim to be lawyers. If they suspect any foul play, please report the matter to the police immediately,” said Maheso.
“The bogus lawyers operate by coming to your house after getting information or details of a family member who had been arrested and pretend to be real lawyers saying they can help with bail application and other court proceedings.”
“In return the bogus lawyers would ask you to pay money into their accounts in order to assist you.”
Maheso also stressed that bail money can only be paid at the Clerk of the Court and at police stations.
The police have not yet made any arrests.
