Thieves are on the loose in Sunnyside and surrounding areas, giving motorists little opportunity to enjoy the festive season.
This was revealed by Sunnyside police on Wednesday, noting an increase of theft from vehicles. Police urged motorists to remain vigilant at all times.
Police said one of the recent incidents on the corner of Francis Baard and Johann streets in Arcadia was on Tuesday when a 30-year-old woman had her valuables stolen from her car after parking it.
Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said criminals made use of vehicle jamming devices to gain access to the vehicles.
She expressed concern that most motorists were still negligent despite numerous police awareness drives about criminals using vehicle-jamming devices.
“I urge motorists not to leave valuables visible in their vehicle and to double-check at all times that all doors of their vehicles are properly locked. Doors could only be checked by hand to see if they are locked or not,” Malatsi said.
Malatsi said police could only win the fight against crime by working together with the public.
She urged residents to report any suspicious activities in the area to the police and wished everyone a merry Christmas and happy new year.
