Frikkie du Preez, one of the so-called Waterkloof 4 killers, was released on parole on Friday – making him the last of the four young men to be released from prison.
Du Preez walked out of prison after serving more than 50% of his 12-year sentence for killing a homeless man in Moreleta Park on 1 December 2001.
On Tuesday, the controversial Christoff Becker, another one of the Waterkloof 4, was also paroled after his legal team obtained an urgent court order against correctional services to have him released.
Du Preez was now the last member of the four to be released following the conviction of the four young men in the North Gauteng High Court in June 2005. They were sentenced to 12 years imprisonment and an attempt to appeal their conviction and sentence failed in the same court in May 2008.
The four, Becker, Du Preez, Gert van Schalkwyk and Reinach Tiedt, killed the man by beating and kicking him to death. The victim had never been identified.
Du Preez and Becker were paroled on 11 February this year, but had their parole revoked after a video showing the two partying and using a cellular phone in prison, came to light. They were back in prison on 28 February.
