Shoppers need to be cautious when they visit malls in the coming weeks and keep their belongings safe, says Mike Kidson, managing director of ADT Northern Region.
Kidson says a packed store is often a preferred hunting ground for pick-pockets and handbag snatchers.
“Try to carry as little as possible in your handbag or pockets and rather leave unnecessary bank or store cards and large amounts of cash at home.”
Shoppers should never leave their handbag in the shopping trolley, and keep their wallet and money in the front pocket of their trousers.
Withdrawing money at an ATM should be done with the utmost care.
Consider using an ATM in a busy area and do not accept help from anyone when entering your PIN. Put the money in your purse or wallet before walking away from the ATM. If you think that someone is following you, walk up to a security guard or into a busy shop.
“Your safety outside the mall is just as important,” says Kidson.
Upon leaving the mall, have your keys ready so that no time is wasted in getting purchases into the car.
“This also means that you will be able to hold onto your handbag as you walk.”
