The police had to come to the rescue of an alleged robber when community members took turns in beating him on Friday morning.
The community turned to mob justice after a man known as “Scarface” allegedly robbed a 75-year-old woman of her pension money in Atteridgeville.
According to eye-witness Mpho Seale, residents were woken up by the elderly woman screaming.
“We immediately knew that something was wrong, so we blew our whistles and every member of the community came out running to help our elderly neighbour.”
He said the elderly woman, Elizabeth Ngobeni, has been staying alone since the beginning of the year and she was always targeted by criminals, especially nyaope addicts.
“We found ‘Scarface’ inside the woman’s house with stolen items and money and some residents started beating him because they have grown tired of the boy and his regular criminal behaviour,” said Seale.
He alleged that ‘Scarface’ was a known criminal in the area, and people were tired of him.
“If police had not shown up the boy would probably have been dead by now.”
He said someone called police and they came to rescue the alleged criminal from an angry mob who was beating the man with everything they could lay their hands on.
Rekord tried to get comment from Atteridgeville police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufumadi but he was not available at the time.
