How to support your child after failing matric

Pauline Graham said parents should not assume that university was the best option for everyone.

Having a child who failed matric will make life difficult for any parent. How do you support your child after such a failure?

Career adviser Pauline Graham said parents should not assume that university was the best option for everyone.

“A year at college could be more beneficial, especially since college tends to offer more support than university, which is what some students need,” she explains.

Encourage your child to do research on options available.

Explain to your child that failing was not the end of the world. He or she could always write supplementary examinations the following year.

There was also the option of redoing matric full time at an FET (Further Education and Training) college. Parents could explain to their child that they could acquire skills and a matric qualification at such a college.

Another option was a gap year, giving your child more time to get clarity about the future.
