Hercules police are warning residents to be cautious of different crimes common in the area during the festive season.
Police spokesperson, Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said most of the crimes committed during the festive season are home burglaries, vehicle theft, theft out of motor vehicles, shoplifting, common and armed robberies, domestic violence and assault.
“Crimes like assault and domestic violence are caused by the influence of alcohol. We urge the community to be responsible and control their alcohol intake.”
Msimango shared a few tips on how to avoid some of the crimes.
For home burglaries, he said residents should make sure their doors are locked at all times; neighbours watch over each other’s homes; the public report any suspicious people or vehicles in their area to police; and ensure someone has access to your home in the event of a burglary and that the alarm system is active.
“In terms of vehicle theft and theft out of vehicles – do not park on the street when visiting friends. At all times make sure vehicles are properly locked and alarms are activated. Check doors to ensure they are properly locked and do not only depend on the alarm system,” said Msimango.
Regarding shoplifting, Msimango suggested that shops intensify security because thieves take advantage of the busy festive season. He said shops should make sure their CCTV cameras are activated at all times.
“Armed and common robberies happen regularly when people go shopping and have large amounts of cash on them. Be careful when withdrawing money and make sure about security when drawing large amounts of cash. Also make sure you are not followed,” said Msimango.
