Law breakers got whacked this weekend when a joint anti-crime operation in the north-west of the city saw the Tshwane metro police and their Ga-Rankuwa counterparts arresting 270 people for a host of crimes.
Ga-Rankuwa police spokesman Warrant Officer Mathew Nkoadi said the suspects were taken into custody for crimes ranging from, among others, possession of stolen property and unlicensed firearms, to possession of dagga and drunk driving.
“This weekend’s operation was part of a weekly joint operation between Ga-Rankuwa police and the Tshwane Metro police. We are trying to make our communities safer as well as root out the bad criminal elements in the area.”
Nkoadi said the arrested people were nabbed at roadblocks and some in taverns and shebeens.
“All the arrested people will appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”
Nkoadi said the weekend operations were clearly paying off as the number of people being arrested was decreasing every week.
He said the operations were going to be a regular occurrence over the December and January festive period.
“A lot of crime is committed over the holidays, so we will be increasing manpower and police visibility in the Ga-Rankuwa area.”
Nkoadi said police will be clamping down on drunk drivers, illegal shebeens, wanted suspects and other crimes such as house breakings, theft of motor vehicles and possession of illegal substances.
He advised home owners to ensure that their houses were properly locked during the holidays and there was someone watching over their property while the home owners are away.
