People living on smallholdings west of Pretoria should be on their guard against the notorious bolt cutter gang this festive season, the Hercules police warned this week.
The gang of seven men has been terrorising residents the past few months, robbing them of cash, cellphones and other valuables. The culprits are ruthless in committing their crimes, using a rifle, pistol and a bolt cutter.
Hercules community policing forum (CPF) chairperson Conrad Naude said: “We want to work together with the community to keep them safe from these men. Whistles have been donated to the residents to use in times of danger.
“The risk for robbery and armed robbery will now be greater than any other time. People should make others around them aware of the risk so that they can avoid being victims and the risk can be minimised.”
He advised residents to have emergency numbers with them all the time, and urged them to use their whistles when under attack.
Police have warned the residents of the smallholdings to not keep large amounts of money with them.
“Residents should not keep large amounts of money with them, but rather put it safe in the bank. We also want the community to assist us in catching these men,” Captain Bonginkosi Msimango from the Hercules police station said.
