An alleged car thief was killed in a three-way shoot-out with Altech Netstar investigators and Garstfontein police in Mamelodi on Friday evening.
According to one of the Netstar investigators on scene they had been trying to find the alleged thief for quite some time. “We had been looking for this person for quite a while. He had stolen different cars and hurt a lot of people in the process. We had gotten information of his whereabouts and went to find him.”
The inspector said when he and police officers arrived at the suspect’s home in Equestria they found a stolen Range Rover Sport they had been looking for. The original black vehicle had been re-sprayed white. When the suspect left his home police and Netstar investigators followed him all the way to Mamelodi.
In Mamelodi the suspect opened fire on them. The police returned fire and a shot hit the radiator of the suspect’s car. When the suspect fled on foot he was wounded by a shot fired by one of the police officers.
“The suspect then temporarily got away, jumping over a wall and breaking into a house. He entered the house and asked the resident to take him to hospital. The man then helped the suspect into his blue Opel Corsa. We were driving around when we noticed the car and thought the suspect had stolen it, and stopped the car. We then saw that the suspect was seriously injured and on the back seat. We phoned the ambulance services.”
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann confirmed that they had responded to the call just after 22:00 and took a seriously wounded man to hospital.
According to the Netstar investigator the suspect later died in hospital. “We suspect the man was planning on breaking into another house in the evening, as many of the items he had with him included gloves and a gun.”
Mamelodi police were unable to comment.
