All systems go for the matric results

UMALUSI, the Quality Assurance Council, has declared the 2014 NCS examinations free, fair and credible.

Basic education minister, Angie Motshekga, will announce the National Senior Certificate (NSC) results on Monday.

Umalusi, the quality assurance council, has declared the 2014 NCS examinations free, fair and credible.

“This achievement is attributed to the unwavering commitment demonstrated by examination officials at the department of basic education (DBE) and across the provinces,” DBE spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga said.

City Press reported that chairperson of Umalusi, Professor John Volmink, expects the matric pass rate to drop for the first time in five years by 5%.

In a media statement Volmink released on 30 December 2014, he said mathematics and physical sciences were the two subjects most pupils had problems with.

Volmink said the inclusion of Euclidean geometry and probability together with increase in statistics and data handling and algebra means the CAPS mathematics curriculum has proven to be a challenge for many pupils.

With physical sciences, Volmink said the CAPS curriculum represented a slight change in format and structure of the content and pupils performed worse than 2013 at all levels. Because of this, adjustments became a necessity.

The DBE have not yet commented on these allegations.

Pupils can access their results in various newspapers using only their examination number. Alternatively they can SMS their ID number, followed by their examination number to 35658 or dial *120*35658#.
