A total of 233 people have been arrested over the weekend for various crimes in Atteridgeville, Laudium and Erasmia.
Police said on Monday the suspects were arrested for house burglaries, possession of dagga, and common assault. Police spokesperson, Captain Thomas Mufumadi said: “The arrests came after stop and search operations, roadblocks and random stopping of vehicles in the area.”
He said police in the area would try and minimise crime as it is suspected to be high. “Some homeowners are still away on their December holidays and criminals target these houses.” Mufumadi said various routes would be highly monitored. He said roadblocks were set up on WF Nkomo Street (Church), Quagga Road and the R55.
Police were looking for any illegal items such as dangerous weapons, drugs, illegal firearms and stolen items. “We will continue with random roadblocks up until the holiday makers return to their homes. Many people have not returned to work yet and some will be on the roads daily. The roadblocks will continue for the next two or three weeks.”
Mufumadi said arrested people would appear at the Atteridgeville magistrate’s court once they were formally charged.
