Two illegal scrap metal dealers failed to bribe officers of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) on Monday after they, along with a third culprit, were caught in possession of over a 100 kg of stolen copper cables.
According to a reliable source, the TMPD Special Projects Team received information about the scrap metal dealership from a man that was questioned on the offset of his stolen copper.
The man then accompanied the team to the scrap metal dealer in Quagga Street, Pretoria West where he is believed to usually sell the stolen copper.
According to the source, the team then observed the scrap metal dealer for a few hours when they decided to enter the premises around 16:45 and conducted an inspection.
“The team found two women and a man in charge of the business. Officers inspected the registers but was told that the business only opened that day and that there were no copper on their premises at the time,” the source said.
“The team searched the premises and found 137 kg of copper cables hidden under a blanket. The three culprits were then arrested for possession of stolen property.”
The source further told Rekord that while the team was busy loading the stolen cables, the two women approached officers and offered them a R10 000 bribe.
The team pretended to accept the money and arrested the two women for bribery.
Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, TMPD spokesperson, failed to comment.
