Matric results announced
Although the pass rate has dropped by 2.4% from 78.2% in 2013 to 75.8% in 2014, Basic Education Minister is happy with the results.
Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga released the 2014 matric results on Monday and commented on the outcome.
Although the pass rate has dropped by 2.4% from 78.2% in 2013 to 75.8% in 2014, Motshekga said the department was happy with the results as they have reached their 2014 target of 75% a year ago.
“When we came into office in 2009, through our agreement performance with the presidency and schooling 2030 we had targeted 75% by 2014. In 2013 we achieved 78.2%, we had surpassed our target with a year to go,” she explained.
With no province reflecting a pass rate below 50%, Gauteng had the highest number of pupils who passed matric achieving an 84.7% pass rate. This province was followed by North West with 84.6% and the Free State with 82.8%.
“We are very proud of the class of 2014 because the Class of 2014 was the first group to write the final CAPS-aligned examinations,” Motshekga said.
The minister also reminded those who did not do well of the various alternatives available.
“A total of 135 943 candidates qualify for supplementary exams taking place in February and March. We will be discussing with provinces soon to agree on how this class is given special support for supplementary exams and repeaters as a special group that experienced many changes during their FET phase,” she explained.
She also pleaded with educators to assist these particular pupils in preparing for the exams.
“Provinces will be requested to provide them with the necessary assistance to prepare for these exams,” she said.
Motshekga also said pupils who will be writing supplementary exams should start to prepare immediately.
Two pupils from Hoërskool Centurion, J.D Hayns and Jacques Stone, both received eight distinctions.
Hayns is the school’s top achiever with 90% and more for all his subjects, including 98% for Mathematics.
Deputy Principal, Jeanette van Staden, congratulated the class of 2014.
“Well done Woeries. May you carry the school’s ‘steeds hoër’ (still high) in your future,” she said.
